(May Allaah raise his rank and grant him peace)

During bowing and prostrating

1. The Messenger of Allaah (صلي الله عليه و سلم) said:

“Verily the leader (‘Imaam) was put in place in order to be followed, so when he makes takbeer (to say Allaahu Akbar), then make takbeer, when he bows, then, bow, when he says:

 

سَمِعَ اللهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ

(Allah hears whoever praises Him)

then, say:

 

رَبَّنَا وَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ

(Our Lord, praise is Yours)

 

When he prostrates, then prostrate; and if he prays sitting down, then pray, sitting down, altogether.

2. It is reported by way of Huthayfah that he heard the Prophet (صلي الله عليه و سلم) saying upon having bowed:

 

سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الْعَظِيمِ

(I declare my Lord free from all imperfection,  the Exalted) [three times in Arabic]

 

and upon having prostrated:

 

 سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الأَعْلَى

(I declare my Lord free from all imperfection, the Most High) [three times in Arabic]

3. Aa’ishah said: The Messenger of Allaah  (صلي الله عليه و سلم) used to plentifully say in his bowing and his prostrating:

 

سُبْحَانَكَ اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّنَا وَبِحَمْدِكَ اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي

(I declare Allaah, Our Lord free of all imperfections, all praise is for Him,  O Allaah , forgive me)

4. The Messenger of Allaah (صلي الله عليه و سلم) used to say in his bowing and his prostrating:

 

سُبُّوحٌ، قُدُّسٌ، رَبُّ الْمَلَائِكَةِ وَالرُّوحِ

 (I declare Allaah free of all imperfections, Lord of the Angels and the Spirit)

5.  The Prophet (صلي الله عليه و سلم) said:

“Verily, I have been forbidden from the recitation of the Qur’aan while bowing or prostrating.  As for the bowing, magnify Your Lord in it, and as for the prostration, strive in supplication in it, for it’s worthy that you be granted”.

6.  ‘Awf bin Maalik said: I stood up in prayer with the Messenger of Allaah (صلي الله عليه و سلم), thus he stood up and read Surat (al-Baqarah), not passing upon a verse of mercy except that he would stop and ask Allaah, nor would he pass by a verse of torment except that he would stop and solicit Allaah’s protection from it, he said [in continuation]: Then he bowed for as long as he stood, saying in his bow:

 

سُبْحَانَ ذِي الْجَبَرْوتِ، وَالْمَلَكُوتِ، وَالْكِبْرِيَاءِ، وَالْعَظَمَةِ

 (I declare Allaah free of all imperfections,

Master of power, of dominion, of majesty and greatness)

 

 Then is his prostration he prostration he would say the same.

7. The Messenger of Allaah (صلي الله عليه و سلم) said:

“The closest that a servant gets to His Lord is when he is in prostration, so supplicate plentifully when you are in prostration”.

8. The Messenger of Allaah (صلي الله عليه و سلم) used to say in his prostration:

 

اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي ذَنْبِي كُلَّهُ، دِقَّهُ وَجِلَّهُ، وَأَوَّلَهُ وَآخِرَهُ وَعَلَانِيَتَهُ وَسِرَّهُ

 (O Allaah, forgive me all my sins, great and small, the first and the last,

those that are apparent and those that are hidden)

9. Aa’ishah said: One day I noticed the absence of Prophet  (صلي الله عليه و سلم) ([from the bed]), so I started looking for him, then my hand came in contact with the bottom of his feet, he was in the mosque, his feet was propped up, and he was saying:

 

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِرِضَاكَ مِنْ سَخَطِكَ، وَبِمُعَافَاتِكَ مَنْ عُقُوبَتِكَ،

وَاَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْكَ، لَا أُحصِي ثَنَاءً عَلَيْكَ، أَنْتَ كَمَا أَثْنَيْتَ عَلَى نَفْسِكَ

 (O Allaah, I seek protection in Your pleasure from Your anger, and I seek protection in Your forgiveness from Your punishment. I seek protection in You from You. I cannot count Your praises. You are as You have praised Yourself)

Supplication for sitting between two prostrations

 

10. In between the two prostrations the Messenger of Allaah  (صلي الله عليه و سلم) used to say:

 

اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي، وَارْحَمْنِي، وَاهْدِنِي، وَاجْبُرْنِي،

وَعَافِنِي، وَارْزُقْنِي، وَارْفَعْنِي

(O Allaah forgive me, have mercy on me, guide me,

support me, protect me, provide for me and elevate me)

11. In between the two prostrations the Messenger of Allaah  (صلي الله عليه و سلم) used to say:

 

رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِي رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِي

 (Lord, forgive me. My Lord, forgive me)
